Why is it that I'm just okay with paying at least $30 a carton every week of my life? That's $30 x 52 weeks a year at $1,560 total per year! And to top it off, there's 200 cigarettes in a carton so that's a whopping 10,400 cigarettes smoked per year!

And that's being easy on the numbers! Sometimes I may smoke more, sometimes I may smoke less, and anyone who smokes knows that $30 per carton is one heck of a deal...

So what's my deal? If anyone who doesn't smoke is reading this, my absolute best advice is just don't start. You may enjoy it, the calming effect they can have, and truly when everyone else is doing it, it's just so easy to be sucked into it and do it as well... but don't. I haven't suffered any health problems yet, but jeez. I've been smoking for 9 years so that's $14,040 spent on smokes in my life. That's 93,600 cigarettes I've smoked in my life! In only 9 years! Imagine those people who smoke all their lives!

It's just not worth it!

I think you just answered your own question...

The simple answer is that you are addicted to the nicotine.

I smoked for 10 years back when it was dirt cheap (I was in the Navy and we paid about $5 a carton at sea). I got a bad case of bronchitis and couldn't smoke for a week while I recuperated. The illness helped mask the withdrawal symptoms. When the illness subsided, I asked myself why I would want to start back up and couldn't think of a good reason. There were short relapses but I've been clean for over 25 years.

It can be done. Get some help.

I know how you feel. I've been smoking for only five years now but I always wonder why the hell don't I stop? It's hard and frustrating and smelly and so bad for your health but yet I use it as a calming mechanism and a past time. I've spent so much money on cigarettes! Even when I didn't have money to buy food for myself, I made sure that I had at least two dollars every day to buy a pack of cigarettes! How completely stupid is that?!

2007-02-21 02:57:25 · answer #3 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

why are you stupid enough to smoke? ok, let me guess.... you like being broke, you love smelling like dog%$#* and you like having those wrinkles around your mouth, not to mention that terrific phlegmy laugh that smokers have, and that great morning hacking where you cough up a chunk or two of fresh lung. is that it? do i win?

seriously, you are right. smoking is awful. i almost lost my mind last month when i found out that my oldet son was smoking. he is 19, away at college. an honor student. i cried.

i smoked for a long time and finally quit about 20 years ago. it is such an awful habit. the good news is that you can quit, i did it without any patches or gum or anything. i just made up my mind and i stopped. it can be done. you need to know that the human mind is stronger than any drug or habit or addiction, if you want it.

by the way, when i smoked i was always feeling short of air, could never exercise and was overweight. i quit smoking, began walking which turned to running and i am now 70 pounds lighter and a run every day... i never have a desire to smoke.

you can stop. here is my advice: just quit for one day. every time you want to smoke, brush your teeth, take a walk, call a friend. just don't smoke for one day. then the next day when you wake up, do the same thing. repeat daily for the rest of your life!

Then quit!
If it don't go with your goals in life then it will not be hard!
trust me! smoke free for 6 months now and loving it! and yes 30 bucks is a cheap carton..
But remember smoking is a habit it don't make you a bad person! You just need to figure out what you want to do with YOU and see how smoking is helping YOU get where YOU want to be! if it helps then rock on.. if not then try building a new habit!
Remember if your trying to stop a habit it is not easy no matter what the habit is! your subconsiece will want to go back to you "norm" and normally smoking has kept you alive so your brain don't know that it is "hurting" your brain thinks you need to smoke to stay alive so if you quit you will say to your self or y our brain will say to you! i need that smoke i got to smoke i'm going to die if i don't smoke! But once you wake up and see that it's just the old habit trying to get back into the swing of things or it's norm.. you will be able to fight it easier!
Good luck if you quit..
Honestly it's not that hard if you really try and think about your goals! funny i tryied programs and other types of quiting in the past after 2 failing tries my final time my 3rd time it was all just a mind set! and it was a peice of cake! don't think for a minute i haven't had a craving i have i just deal with that challenge when it comes!
And I have had a smoke with in the 6months it makes me ill like really sick now! but if i party i don't notice how ill I won't say i won't smoke but i will say it is now not a habit..

other thing that was said to me was Why would i let this little peice of rolled stuff run my life! so what if i am sitting in my pjs and i realize i don't have smokes to get me through the night! WHY would i get up get dressed run out in the cold to buy a pack of smokes! thats is letting an object control me! and well frankly i'm a control freak so that freaked me out!
:)
Best wishes!
coping.org my help if you want to soul search may help you change your mind set but not help you stop smoking! That you need to do on your own!
Best of luck

it's all mind over matter. i quit smoking over 5 years ago when i found out i was pregnant. i had no choice to keep going - it was no longer about me. so i stopped. haven't had one since & it's easy to do if you really want. try this - pick your most difficult day of the week. that's the day you're going to quit. if you can stop on that day, you can stop on any day. and cold turkey is the best way to quit. just do it & work through the cravings - they will go away. finally, if you drink, don't drink for a while. you'll want to light up with a beer - i know! but again, it'll all go away with time. good luck!

So stop, already. I smoked for 12 years. I was up to 2 packs a day during the last year. I decided one day that it all not only wasn't worth it and was extremely harmful to me, but that it was also harming anyone who happened to be around me. I quit cold turkey and it wasn't a problem and I haven't ever wanted to smoke again. That was years ago.

You can quit. I smoked for 12 years and 2 weeks ago I finally quit. I am using the patch and some days are really much harder than others but I think it is worth it for the pocket book and I agree with you 100%. GOOD LUCK

Wow...*looking at the figures*
Well...why don't you stop smoking? Use that good amount of money for something better like vacation, new stuff, etc? Not to worry...I don't smoke. That stuff is nasty and my allergies will not tolerate it. I have been around my Mom smoking for 18 years and that is enough for me. She smoked since she was 17 years old.
Yes, I do get sick from her smoke but it didn't faze her one bit about it. Unfortunately, she had passed on because of 2nd time cancer...cause by smoking....she was 69. I missed her.
