The easiest way to accomplish that important house training of your new puppy is to use a crate. By following the steps described here, success will be assured and your puppy will be accident free much faster than with any other method. What is even more important is that he will be a happier and safer puppy because he is accustomed to being crated some of the time.

Using a crate is gentle and humane and dogs, being den animals, like their crates because it is "home". The most important rule in house training is consistency. Set up a schedule and stick with it for as long as it takes (and a week or two longer, just to be sure). The puppy is to be in his crate at all times unless he is (a) out for a brief playtime or (b) being exercised. Only after he has urinated and/or had a bowel movement outside can he be let out to play and then only for a brief period. Puppies like to eat and sleep so they really don't need to be out for long periods. They should always be crated at night and when you are away from home. This protects both the puppy and your furniture and carpets. hope this helps.

Mom52 and Lindsay are EXACTLY right, the only thing I would add is you should be able to figure out how soon it will need to defacate after eating and make sure it is outside to do so. Praise lavishly when they do the right thing and a firm "NO" when doing the wrong thing.Smacking and hitting just teaches them to be afraid of you.Realise that a 6 week old pup is too young to know any better.

8 weeks is usually a good start, but they don't understand punishment until they're 3 or 4 months. Make sure that you are very CONSISTENT--take that puppy out every half hour and stay out there until it pees. It's really the only way. Then make sure it knows that you are SO happy that it went outside! Inside, keep it on a leash and make it go with you everywhere you go so that you can catch it in the act. Say NO very loudly and firmly, and carry it outside to where you want it to go.

Show her right away where you want her to go - preferable outside if that is where you can take her - this is time consumming and you must watch her carefully, to catch her when she starts to go - if not in the right place correct her with no no no and place her where she needs to be. commend her for being so good when done - they learn fast and have a tendancy to teach us.
