I want to get a kitten, and i figured, cats eat less than dogs do, they use a litter box, and thats it. After you fix them, get them their shots, there's no other expense except for if it gets sick or something...
any ideas of about how much it costs EACH MONTH????

it at depends on how well YOU want to care for your kitten...........

when we got ours...........we went to pets mart and paid around 80. for all her supplies...... purina food , food dish/bowl, we got her tidy cats cat litter, a litter pan, a poop-er scooper, some cat TREATS, a couple of wet food cans, a flea collar and think thats about it.(that doesnt include the collar~~we already had one)

if you buy the larger bag of food like the 10-12 lbs you will see that it lasts you around 2 months(as it does us)if you have an older cat

as for the litter if you dont want your house smelling like poo........
your gonna want to go with the more pricier brands.......they really do work.....rather than the store brands.(which you might need to but up to every three weeks @ $8.00 a pop....sometimes people just arent ready for the expenses of a cat

so like i said it just depends on how YOU want treat her.

and generally the first dr visit with shots is about another 80............

you can go to the humane society and adopt for a few dollars more and they already come with first visit and shots (depending on the age of course)~~~and they give you a free collar with a printed id tag

but to answer your question i would say about $15..(A MONTH)........
10. bag of food every two months.........divided by two $5.00 a month cat litter every 3 weeks at 8.00 a bucket and a dollar or two for the water he or she will be drinking throughout the month........
the friendship of a feline....priceless

well good luck and i hope you do decide to get a soft furry friend!!!

Renee - We've raised two cats on our own from kittens. Of course the first 6 months is going to be more expensive (roughly $50-$100 per month) just to get its shots and such. When the kittens started growing up, we bought them a tub feeder and just poured a bag of cat food in there and let them eat when they want. We replace our cat food maybe once every two months, and we have two indoor/outdoor, high-energy cats. You can get kitty litter (if your cats are indoor cats), which usually is about $4 at Walmart. When you cats are 6 months or older, you'll really only spend about $10 a month total. If you don't mind the cat going outside to play, (it will always come back as long as you're feeding it and it doesn't get stolen) you can train them to only use the bathroom outside and therefore reducing the amount per month just by eliminating kitty litter.
Good luck and feel free to email me if you have any more questions.

A dollar a day per cat is an approximate estimate - unless you feed it Fancy Feast then you can double that. Kittens can cost slightly more than that since they tend to eat more, poo and pee more and that means more food and more litter. Plus kitten food costs more than adult food and it doesn't seem to come in bulk size bags for some reason. Kittens probably cost 30% to 40% more than a full grown adult (depending on the stage of their growth) - excluding neutering and vaccinations. So, count on that cost factor for the first year of their life.

My cats live on Science Diet. I get the largest size bag I can at the vet and that costs me around $30 and it lasts forever... okay well maybe 6 weeks to two months. I supplement their diet with some wet food - just two large spoonfuls a day, one in the morning and one at night. Between two cats, a can lasts a day and a half. Those cans are about 30 cents each. I buy them "Special Kitty" clumping clay litter (a 30 lb bag available at walmart for under 7$ a bag) and that lasts 3 weeks to a month. You are also going to want to get toys for your cats. I budget around 5$ a month at most for toys because they are always needing to be replaced.

Don't try to save money though by making your an outdoor cat. Outdoor cats have an average life espectancy of only 5 years as compared to indoor cats of 15 years. Plus they are more susceptible to getting hurt and getting sick which you will make up for with vet bills.

You're basically right about you've considered. Fancy Feast costs much more than some other brands, & interestingly, isn't as nutritious. I get Arm & Hammer litter because it doesn't have much "dust," my cat likes it, & I clean it every day (you probably wouldn't have to with a kitten?) & put the clumps in a tight lidded kitchen garbage "can" & there's no oder at all. Be sure you use BOTH dry & moist food! I leave out about a quarter cup dry all day because she likes to nibble, & then moist food at night. I just have to say that I SO agee with ineeddono's last paragraph. Indoor cats live MUCH longer, so many dangers out there; rabid animals., CAT HATERS, cars & so on. If you keep your kitty 100% indoors FOR SURE, you won't need most of the shots. My kitty is 12 years old & on a prescription diet, & I won't even tell you how much THAT costs.

PLEASE by the way, the "other" DRAGON has been cloning me for two days, I'd never answer like that. I LOVE cats & don't get any pleasure out of insulting people. Most people on this site know me, anyway! Hey, another advantage is you don't have to get up in the middle of the night, or in the rain to WALK YOUR CAT! You got lots of good answers, except one! Good luck with the kitten. I've found the "bonding" between humans & felines is extraordinary! Especially if you're home most of the time as I am, since I'm self employed. & talk lots to him/her. You'll be surprised at what they learn.

Lets see... I just adopted a 6 month old female kitten this weekend ! The adoption fee was $100 dollars because she was already spayed and vaccinated! I did take her to the vet because she has a cold! That ended up costing me 98 bucks (the visit itself was free because I adopted and the VCA appreciates that) because she has ringworm on her ear and needed FIV testing (alot of humane societies do Feluk testing but not FIV) it is very important to have the FIV testing and it cost about $50 bucks! I also had to pay for a feces sample (have to have her poop tested)! Thats not the end though she needs two more vaccinations one in the beginning of march and one in the beginning of April! Not to mention when I adopted her I had to buy a carrier for her, her own litter box, some toys, and kitten food! Cat food costs alot for me because i like to use the Nutro brand! It isnt cheap the first month or so but it gets better! Litter and food will be your constant expense (also bottled water in my case... my cats are spoiled and dont drink city water)! Also if you adopt a kitten (most agencies will only let you if you promise not to declaw) then you will need a scratching post... Which will range in price! I also purchased a bed! So is it costly... Yes! Is it worth it? Hell Yes! Definatley adopt and do not declaw... It is cruel and inhumane... its the same as cutting your own fingers off up to your first knuckle! For extra information check out the United States Humane Society! Good Luck and if this seems something out of your price range then consider adopting at a more stable time!

I spend about $12 month for scoopable litter (Tidy Cat 25#). It may last you longer because I have 2 adult cats using it. I spend about $15 month on food. My cats eat Kit and Kaboodle dry food. Its not high priced or the best quality, but its affordable. Purina Kitten Chow would be a good choice for you. Cat Chow when kitten is grown up. My cats are 16yo and have had no medical issues. I tried Science Diet when they were younger and they didn't eat it.

Its cost me about 20 to 25 dollars a month, I buy his can food when its on sale, he eats one can a everyday for 15yrs. and I also have dry food always available. Kitty litter from wal-mart. But you also need to figure in vet bills. those can run anywhere from 50 dollars a year, and up. Sometimes i have had to spend 300.
00 a year in vet bills. things come up , and stuff happens. Be prepared. All in all, money well spent. Years of love and companionship. Well worth the expenses

Its like super cheap. They dont eat much, you can buy a big bag of food which would prob last for 2 weeks depending on the size. If you're going to feed them wet food it might be more....but I dont recommend. I would say with litter you would prob spend between 20-30 bucks a month.
