Aside from Ali proclaiming he was "The Greatest" during the turbulent time of the 60's he was a voice when others were silenced for whatever the reason. It wasn't so long ago in our past and still persist today that certain ethnic groups are treated very differently than the majority.

Ali refusing induction into the United States Armed Forces was a huge deal and the implications of that are still being felt even today. There are those that would like to call Ali a "Traitor" or "Draft Dodger" but I say to you nothing can be further from the truth. He stood his ground and said "Do to me what you will" and they did he didn't run to Canada as so many others did, he wasn't absent from some National Guard unit.

He spoke out against racism and prejudices against religions. He is truly iconic.

As far as being the greatest boxer of all time, well my friend that place is alreadt taken by Sugar Ray Robinson and others.

Thanks for the question Sohaib.

Ali reinvented the sport. He brought it to a new level by intellectualizing it. He was impossible to predict or dissect because he continually changed his fighting style. He shocked (more like punked) George Foreman with the rope-a-dope during the "rumble in the jungle". He was lightening fast and could throw power punches.
He was an entertainer as much as an athlete, and people loved him. He had an over the top personality yet still managed to be charming. He was incredibly intelligent, sensitive, and full of integrity. He made bold political moves during turbulent times, and yet somehow managed not to alienate his fans. He was a role model for a generation. He's an icon.
He's the greatest!

He had incredibly quick hands, and he fought in an era when the best heavyweights fought, and he was the best of them all. It is a matter of opinion though.
