Okay....got two for you....

1. If your dog is one that doesn't like poo (mine doesn't eat poo etc), dig out a little bit of dirt where the digging occurs and place a poo in there...cover it up just a bit. This stops my little one all the time.

OR

2. Dogs don't like to dig in straw, place some straw in the hole.

May or may not work....just a suggestion, nothing magic about it!
GOOD LUCK! :o)

I agree that your dog might be bored (could also be stressed out). Even if your dog is a 100% -outside-only-dog, they still need exercise outside like a nice, long walk (45 min). A tired dog isn't a desrtuctive one (this rings true for the behaviour problems with my dog).

OK, so your dog has dug a hole: put it inside or out of sight of you and the hole. Find some of your dog's poop (stay with me on this), place it in the hole, then recover ii with the dirt. Again, don't let your dog see you cover the hole, or even dig in the yard when you do yard work. When your dog sees you (you should be the alpha in your family's pack) dig in the yard, that kind of gives your dog silent consent. "Hey, if the alpha is digging, that means it is alright to dig here. Cool!" The poop in the holes will deter re digging in the same holes because the dog will smell itself in the poop.....which is in the hole!

The balloon idea is a good one too!

1)Your dog is bored. Don't leave him out there for long periods of time. And don't leave him out there alone. This may seem dumb, but people do come and steal dogs to use to train killer dogs for dog fights.

2)Give your dog a cool spot in the yard in the shade, a kiddie pool with water in it, a sprinkler, whatever he likes.

3)Treat him with some Frosty Paws when it is hot to help him cool down.

4)When they start to dig, tell him no and give him something acceptable to do, this also goes back to not leaving your dog out in the yard alone.

Don't use chicken wire, your dog could get his paws cut up and then you will have a huge vet bill.

The best way is to build a digging pit just for your dog to dig in. Hide toys in it and encourage your dog to dig there and only there. Good luck!....you can also try putting dog poop in the holes that you don't want your dog digging in anymore.....but the dog may just start digging elsewhere.

Hi I know this is going to sound strange but it works. I dug some holes and put a ballon(inflated) in the holes and covered them with dirt. When my dog went to dig in the same area the ballon popped and scared him. I did this in several spots and he doesn't dig anymore!
Oh yes, always go out and get the remaining ballon parts don't want the pooch to try to eat them.

What breed of dog do you have???

If you have a Dachshund, what in the world did you expect??? With some dogs digging is what they do and you won't be changing it no matter what you do. With some others it is quite easy to stop the behavior.
You should be aware of the fact that dogs will often dig to find colder dirt to lay on. So supply them with a cool place to lay.

Its a natural thing for a dog to dig, try taking him for more walks and give him a change of scenery, throw a ball around, try to to get his mind occupied on other things.

I've read that you should have a digging area just for the dog. Reward him when he digs in his area. Discipline him when he digs elsewhere.

Give him bones and stuff to play with out there. My dog only digs when he's bored.

Bury poop in the areas that he digs. Dogs can not stand getting there paws in poop. This is what any trainer will tell you.
