I am so sorry that happened to you. Sweetheart, there are many, many doctors that are very gentle when they do a pap test. Find a WOMAN doctor. There is, unfortunately, no other way to do the exam.

Don't be afraid! Medicine has changed a lot over the years and you are no longer a 7 year old girl with no say! If the procedure is hurting, you can let the doctor know immediately and they will stop. YOU are in control now, not the doctor.

Pelvic exams are very, very important. Find a doctor you can connect with and get your exam done!

Best of luck to you!

Would it be possible for you to go with a friend, and "talk" to your MD before the exam? I know that would help,if the Doctor could understand, and proceed with the exam, causing you less "trauma" mentally and physically etc.You need to know that there are many, many women out there young and old that have your same anxiety and fears,it only takes "one" crude and rude practitioner to set of a lifetime of dread and fear of any sort of medical and dental care.Mine is with dentist's,caused by a orthodontist slapping me several times during an ordeal with braces. The fear remains until I found a Dentist that caters to "cowards".I would become physically ill every time I had to go,now that's much better. Take care. SW RNP

32 yrs is a long time and things have changed.
If you are sexually active or have been it is no where near as traumatizing.
You can request a female doctor or nurse practitioner who are more gentle then male doctors. The nurse practitioners are even better. Ask around for advice on good ones. Most women are willing to help another out.
Also, you can ask them if they would be able to use a small speculum

No that is the only way.

They need to scrap the cells from the cervix and the only way to do that is by a pap
