My boyfriend is inquiring about the type of ring I would like....I know a proposal is upcoming soon. I love tension set rings and I expressed that to him a while back (just jokingly), but now he really thinks that's what I absolutely must have.

But seeing the cost of tension set rings....I don't want him to spend thousands of dollars on it.

What is the range of tension set rings? And for one to look good, how many karats does the diamond need to be? Have not found a store that sells too many tension set rings, except online so I wouldn't know what looks good.

Does anyone know of good stores, online sites, etc that are reliable and good for tension set rings?

I love tension rings too. Keep in mind...you CANNOT resize a tension ring later down the road, so make sure the sizing is perfect.

As for a place to go...do NOT go to Tiffany's. First they do not have tension settings, second although good quality, you are paying for the little blue box.
I would suggest looking at some local mom and pop jewelry stores. Of check out the 1st link below.

To cut costs, look at white gold instead of platinum (can save around $1,000). Also, with any gold, go for 10-14K, not 24k. 10k to 14k is perfect, because it is harder and will last longer.

Also, go for a more perfect diamond, rather than size. A smaller, more perfect diamond will look better than an unclear larger diamond.

Here are some links you might want to look at.

Good luck finding your ring! And best wishes for your engangement and future.

I work at a jewelry store outside of the twin cities and we have a goldsmith that makes custom jewelry. I don't think that you have to have a certain size stone in order to have a tension set ring. If the stone is smaller then the ring will not be has thick and obviously not as large, which is also fine. I would advise you to talk to someone who makes custom jewelry, just have an idea in your head of what it might look like or if you can sketch it out, also have a price range in mind and don't be afraid to say it. The store will be able to help you better with more information. Good luck.

You can go to www.robbinsbros.com and look up all the rings you like and create a "favorites" site on their website. You can give him the info to look it up and that way he knows the different styles you like. He doesn't have to buy the ring from them. BUT he can look closely at what you've picked and purchase something similar from any jewelry store.
Just a thought. I think it would be helpful to a guy...

Oh no, don't get those. My friend had one, and the tension somehow shifted, and she lost the diamond. Who knows where it went.
