Sounds like a hematoma of the ear. My dog had this problem (trauma to the ear from scratching too hard). The vet did minor surgery and put in a few stitches. Stitches were removed in approximately 10 days. His ear looked a little droopy for a while after the stitches were removed, but now his ear looks perfect.

This could be an aural hematoma and requires surgical correction. You should let your vet look at it to make sure. Also, there is probably an ear infection in one of the ears that is causing the dog to shake its head violently enough to cause a ruptured blood vessel. When this happens, blood pools between the cartilage and the skin of the ear flap and that's what you are probably seeing.

Be careful the dog wasn't bit by anything if it's outside alot. Most likely is just some type of ear infection caused by a virus. You have to go to the vet, who can swab the ear, test it and find out exactly what caused it. Go ASAP.

I'm a groomer and I see this very often in our dogs. Redness and swelling inside the ear is definitely an ear infection and very painful for the dog. Definitely has to go to the vet for antibiotics.

is it a floppy ear? does it feel like it is filled with blood/fluid? my old dog had this, i think it's called hematoma. it needs to be seen by a vet and they will have to do minor surgery on it. or is the inside of the ear swollen? like the ear canal? that could be an infection or from too much scratching. sounds like something the vet should see!

It sounds like your dog has managed to knock its ear on something. It is almost certainly filled up with blood.
The best thing is to take it to the vet, I believe it is quite easy to sort out, but most be done by a vet.
