Who would keep poultry (just hens, not cockerels, unless you live in the middle of nowhere or beside allotments) as pets? Just think of all the fresh eggs, and if you were brave enough, free-range chicken for dinner. (I'd go for eggs, not meat as I'm vegetarian). I hatch poultry chicks and then give them to very good homes and it's fantastic to see the first tiny embryos at 3 days old and then have a fully grown chick hatch less than three weeks later.

I agree it's easy to keep chickens in the garden, but what happens when you get miserable, hypocritical neighbours?

I keep five hens in an ordinary suburban garden as do many hundreds of people throughout the country. they make little or no noise, require little looking after and give 3-4 eggs per day. It's no harder than keeping a couple of rabbits.

I've been thinking of doing this in the Spring (too cold now to build a chicken enclosure). I love birds and I would love fresh eggs and I would have the knowledge that they came from hens that had free roam and organic grains.

Yes, I have 5 chickens, 1 for each of my kids. They love going to get the eggs and the chickens themselves are really endearing. They are quite maintenance free and when I'm in the garden Iet them out to free range and come and eat the worms I dig up.

We had a puppy named fowl George - a fowl. we've all distinctive varieties of pets, we proceed to exist a farm, and a fowl is a tremendous relaxing puppy. you could not coach them to apply the bathing room exterior yet there are alot of different issues you could coach them. they'll take a seat with you while you examine, watch television or maybe flow with you to city. Our puppy used to take a seat on the back of the truck seat. sure i'm severe. they're incredibly relaxing pets.

Yes, i had about 30 chickens at one time and there were 2 special chickens in the whole bunch that would come up and let me pet them and they would sit next to me on the bench. it was cool, plus they are one heck of a garbage disposal, they eat anything.
