It could be any number of things, from strep throat, to a localized infection, to leukoplakia (a precursor to cancer).

Go see a doctor.

OK, if it is an infection, the doctor will give you antibiotics.
if its a virus, you are on your own.

does it look hard, 'cause not too long ago, i had an odd white "thing" ON my tonsil, and i get strep alot so I went to the doctor to get my medicine, and he said it was just a "localized" infection and should dislodge its self in a few days.
It was totally gross, but three days later, I was having a coughing fit and the thing popped off!!!! I'm serious, I almost swallowed it!!!
I'm not trying to gross you out or anything, I'm just telling you the truth. It has happend two more times since then.

Sounds like tonsilitis. I I were you, i'd go get it seen by your doctor he might want to run a strep culture on it and give you some antibiotics. Good luck!! Hope you feel better soon!!!
