Buy some card stock, cut it up, fold it in half, and write people's names on it. But really, that's a big waste of time since placecards are really cheap, especially at Michael's or Walmart.

Sure.
The thing I did was use picture frames. You can buy the index cards with no lines on them and have a Caligrapher - or yourself if you want that personal touch - to write the names of the guests. It's cute and you can use small or large or decorated frames.
If it's like a beach theme or outside wedding, you can get those cute little miniature flower pots, fill them with sand, and use a little plastic stick thing (don't remember what they're called) to hold the name card. Maybe even a fresh flower in every pot as favor as well!
Hope these ideas helped. Also, check out links in source.

If your super cheap like me.
Just give the table- table numbers.
Then type of a sheet with the peoples name and what table they are to sit at. Then buy a really nice frame and frame the paper- most people do two frames.
It looks nice, saves time and is super cheap, plus you get the frames back and can use them.
You figure all those cards are going to get thrown out and tossed in the trash- why waste money one them.

I designed my own place cards in Microsoft Publisher and then I had them printed on stiff paper to be able to stand up on the tables. I had a picture of a bride and groom, faded it and positioned the table name across the center. The I had the menu on the other side of the card.
Good luck and congratulations.

I have just done this. I typed in Place card Templates in google and was able to download a template. I then put all the names onto the stencil and printed them out on silver card. They looked Great!!
Another suggestion was to have badges made instead of name cards, using one of those kiddies badge sets.
My friend was giving lottery tickets out as favours and put little silver envelopes with each name on by their places with the lottery ticket inside.
GOOD LUCK XX

You can buy these really cheaply - how about buying plain white and then adapting to your style? You could add glitter, shapes, flowers - anything that would glue on really - you can get lovely items in craft shops and adapt to you have something completely individual and to your own style or theme. How about adding the person's name and a little photo of them - or a photo of the bride and groom. Be adventurous and have a few test runs until you find what you like. Good luck and get creating!

A friend of mine used rocks that they had gathered and polished, then wrote everyone's names on them and the date of the wedding. That was a really nice keepsake of the day.
Or why not get big old fashioned luggage labels that you can tie on to the chairs with ribbons instead of placing the cards on the table.

We bought plain ivory ones from ebay really cheaply and added our own tartan ribbon and tiny thistles, you can buy flowers ribbons etc really cheap on ebay too. We used our own printer and publisher(microsoft office) to print the names in our colour scheme.
We also made invites etc too

Depends on your kind of wedding. I was just at a wedding that had a post card as a table marker. The people that sat at the same table had the same post card.

I used small luggage tags (ivory coloured) and tied these to the favour boxes using ivory ribbon.
