It is possible to live with a cat if you have allergies. Notice I said cat - - - as in ONE cat - - - not several.
Best things to do to make it work are:
1) NO carpet in the house. NONE. Especially in the bedroom & living room.
2) Get a really good quality furnace/air conditioning filter and change it every other month. And between changes, be sure to vacuum it every week.
3) Speaking of vacuuming . . . .do the whole house every week if you possibly can, plus the living room furniture.
4) Don't let kitty sleep with you. Close the bedroom door and make another place, like a chair, a comfy place for him/her to sleep.
4) The bigger, more open the house is, the better chances that your allergies won't act up.
5) You might want to use a sheet or some type of covering on the couch & chairs so that you can remove them and wash them. Either that or consider leather furniture.
6) Hope your kitty likes to be brushed. It's a good idea to take the cat outdoors every few days and brush them. Helps with the shedding & dander.
My son has allergies and we have managed to have a full-time indoor cat. You just wouldn't believe how much cat hair one cat can shed, so if you are VERY allergic and have carpet, you can forget it. You'll be miserable.

I think it depends upon the severity of the allergy. For mild to moderate symptoms I think you are able to build up a tolerance to the particular cat you are living with.
