Ash Wednesday is a Catholic tradition.
It is not in the Bible.
It is not a Christian tradition.
Christians follow the Bible not tradition of a particular religion.

Just to clarify on several comments above- Catholics ARE in fact Christians. The FIRST Christians, actually. So to say that Christians don t fast on Ash Wednesday and that Ash Wednesday is not a Christian tradition is inaccurate. If your sect of christianity does not celebrate it, that is what you should state...
I am Catholic. Therefore, I am a Christian. And yes we fast on Ash Wednesday.
Several other sects of christianity, including Methodists can also be seen with ashes on Ash Wednesday.

Catholics are required to have just one full meal, and two smaller meals which togrther do not equal the full meal. They also are to abstain from meat including poultry on Ash Wednesday. This has been the practice of the Christian Church since well before the introduction of Protestantism. Ashes are the biblical symbol of repentence, while fasting is the biblical means or preparing oneself for any major event in one's spiritual life. A number of Protestants always come to my church on Ash Wednesday, apparently recognizing the spiritual benefit of repentence and fasting, and evidently lacking such spiritual opportunities in their own church.

Catholics in the United States are obliged to abstain from the eating of meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays during the season of Lent.

They are also obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday.

Self-imposed observance of fasting on all weekdays of Lent is strongly recommended. This is where people also give up chocolate, sarcasm, or something else for Lent.

With love in Christ.
