It's not the speed bumps themselves. But the HIGH SPEED that some people go over them that causes the damage.

You are driving over them too fast! NB it is always best to have each side of the car full onto the centre of the bumps if possible. That way there is no twisting action on the bodywork, tyres or suspension.
Yes I agree bumps are a b****y nuisance, but for every driver who goes at a sensible speed there are at least 10 who thing that a 30 sign means less than 40, perhaps!
My estate has just been humped and I'm waiting to see if it reduces accidents. ( nil observed in last 2 years)
Mind there are some roads I can think of where the surface would be improved by humps

As some of the other answers suggest its not normally the speed humps that cause the damage but the speed people drive over them, the 20mph speed limit normally in place at these sites is the maximum speed limit. Also I would add a mechanic can in no way say that a failure on your car is as a direct result of traffic calming. Having said all that my experience is that people campain for traffic calming and when they get it as many other people start complaining about it, a no win situation

its annoying and most annoying when you are in an area where there are lots of them, try and plan your route and find an alternative way to your destination, thus not inflicting damage to your car
