It is natural and has a positive function, but many lakes recieve nutrients from agricultural runoff that cause the algae to grow to excess, this is called a eutrophic lake..like global warming it can be a natural process...but speeded up greatly by the activities of man. Sudden algae blooms deplete oxygen and kill fish. (Fish use the dissolved oxygen contained in the water.)

This sounds strange because algae is a plant (produces oxygen), but a short lived one, if you have masses of algae and they die, the process of decomposition uses up more oxygen...also the clarity of the lake and other vegetation in the lake are affected if you have alot of algae.

It depends on where you live, in an agricultural setting it's more of a problem, other places it might be the sign of a healthy ecosystem...it's all about balance.

Algae supplies food, oxygen, shade and shelter to fish and other life found in rivers and lakes.

In normal situations algae only builds up in excess is when there are little or no fish in the lake or pond to begin with.

And apparently in certain situations agricultural runoff can cause the algae to grow to excess, this is called a eutrophic lake, when the excess algae dies off the bacteria use up the oxygen and sometimes fish will die.

Algae is a plant.and like all plants they absorb carbon dioxide and convert it into oxygen.

Fish both large and small eat and depend on algae for nutrition.

If you go to your local aquarium store you will find algae disc's for sale that even meat eating fish will gobble up quickly.

People try to keep their aquariums algae free so they can see the fish better.

They are then obligated to feed the fish daily after removing this rich food source.
