Why don't religious folk think for themselves and why let someone else tell you the 'truth'?

Hey I had 17 years of religion, don't get me wrong, I studied and studied but the facts just don't tie up. The more I read the more I realised the Christian religion is bunkum , especially when you discover who really wrote the bible. I'm just curious why christians, like smokers, are able to justify everything without a shred of proof/evidence/emperical data.

I was brought up in a strict Catholic household, cathecism twice weekly until I was 14. By 14 I was old enough to read and review, see between the lines and make my own mind up about what I want to believe and disbelieve.

My view is that the churches I went to were full of clones, repeating by rote prayers and thanks to god - for what ? I expect a return on my efforts, I can't wait for heaven. The Bible is just a collection of tales, much like Aesops Fables - and should be used for guidance more than how to live by the letter.

Skeptical scrutiny is the means, in both science and religion, by which deep insights can be winnowed from deep nonsense.

I think each of us has a right to their own opinion. However, just because you don't believe in what someone else does, you shouldn't say it is worse. I have faith and I am very proud of it. I do not think you are any worse or better a person because of what you believe even though you have said that about me. I have an open mind but my faith has seen me through a lot of problems. I don't believe in organized religion and have pretty much created my own as a result. I think that makes me a better person as I am sure you feel the same way about your ideology. Keep up with what you believe. It will probably make you stronger, just don't knock mine. Have a great day!!

The Bible says faith with your power of reason. Unfortunately most people, religious or otherwise are more apt to give in to peer pressure than examine the facts. So, the religious people don't know much more about God and the Bible (as a general rule) than those who have lightly examined the subjects, gotten frustrated with it and given up. It is really sad to think that people would not even exist if God hadn't created them and yet they have no time to read an examine the letter he wrote them to help them to understand him.

One should never try to be blind. Many Christians have an simple (for lack of a better word - unstudied) faith in God. Others have studied translations, bible history, archaeological evidence and other faiths to refine their understanding of God.

Believers should employ all methods available to learn more about our creator. Believers should act and speak rationally and with kindness and tolerance.

Belief in God is none the less experiential not logical/scientific.

Rational thinking is useless in some cases, like the questions"why God created us?" or "what is the soul?",here blind obedience is useful, because your brain can't understand everything in the world, you understand the things which God made you understand only, others are too hard for your brain.and take into consideration that our knowledge is nothing compared to God's.

017.085 And they ask you about the soul. Say: The soul is one of the commands of my Lord, and you are not given aught of knowledge but a little.

Neither is the sole authority when it comes to truth. Logic is a tool, but not an absolute. To prove logic, one has to use logic, and according to logic that is illogical and self defeating. Blind obedience on the other hand is not good either. Because our interpretations of what we are being obedient too can be wrong, we can error vastly (See crusades etc.).

Its the easy option, but it has been taught to us from birth and all we can hope to do is wake up and smell the coffee! In my personal experience tragedy woke me up. Whose to say that your truth isn't the truth and religion is? We just have to examine the eidence and make up our own minds. But with so many distractions like TV and the press adding fire to the fuel, it may be a long time before people actually wake up!

Rational thought. Blind obedience is for trained police dogs.

As usual, you don't understand. God says, "Come and let us reason together." True Christianity involves rational thought. Blind obedience is what is expected in the military. Been there....

Rational thought is always better. Blind obedience will get your money stolen, your child molested, your minister sodomized by his gay lover, etc...all things that happen in organized religions.
