My twin sister is 17, She is a tiny bit over weight, she has got a podgy belly and chunky thighs etc. her weight didnt bother her until we started college where there is lots of pretty & thin girls. She has stopped eating everything completly, she just eats fruit (yesterday she had 2 plums & today 1 banana) & drinks cup a tea's & hot water. I'm not too worried cos wen she gets down 2 the size she wants 2 be she will start eating again but not as much as usual so she can keep her weight down to the right size which will make her happy. How long do u rekon it will take her 2 lose around 7lb not eating anything proper? Also how can she tone out her belly to make it flat? < This would make her feel much better. thanks

She won't be able to lose weight properly this way. Her metabolism will be disordered and she'll stop losing pounds. In addition, this deprivation of real food will result in eating even more after a while. The best thing she can do is follow a healthy diet, low in calories that little by little will help her lose weight. But she should start eating soon, this attitude can be disastrous. As for her belly, if she loses weight it will also fall away. Some exercise that will make the muscles stronger and firmer will also help. Good luck :-)

Binge dieting really doesn't work because as soon as you stop you eat and your weight comes right back. A longer term approach will keep things in check so she won't need to starve herself.

She needs to adjust her diet and see it as a lifestyle change. Staying away from processed foods and carbs and going more toward nature's cafeteria will help her body adjust. Minimize carbs and fats and sweet things, go more protein will do it. She also needs to dedicate some time to good exercise almost everyday. This will help slim and tone. Also, don't eat after 6 or 7 at night, unless it's a small healthy snack.

She will build momentum and self esteem and that will keep her motivated.

You should not "not be worried" because she will eat again after she loses the weight. That's not a healthy way to lose weight, for one, and a lot of girls don't start eating again after they get down to a smaller size, just because they still think they look fat. Call it anorexia, or just a severely unhealthy body image, but a lot of tiny girls go to extremes to lose weight because they still see fat, even when they are down to nothing.

Instead of offering her help in how to continue a dangerous diet plan like starvation and "toning her belly to make it flat", you should be trying to encourage her to love herself and take care of herself. It only takes a few days of not eating to be completely out of energy, be dehydrated (if she isn't drinking enough), have a serious drop in blood sugar, and start having vitamin and iron deficiencies. Not to mention, once she loses the 7 lbs. or so, who's to say she wouldn't get the notion that she could keep going and then REALLY look good? If she goes a while without eating, and then starts eating again, she could actually make herself sick because her body had gotten used to having nothing.

Talk to her, try to get her to see a counselor, or a doctor, or even a personal trainer. If she doesn't listen, talk to your parents, or friends, or boyfriends, or classmates. Be discreet, but she's on a path to self-destruction by eating only a few plums or a banana a day, even if it is only temporary.

With the toning thing, that can take time. What if she keeps not eating until she's toned? That could take weeks, possibly even a few months. Does that sound like a good idea to you?

Try to get her to get help. Be supportive, not of her unhealthy desire to starve herself to look like all the "pretty & thin" girls, but be supportive to help her take care of herself and be healthy. And don't even MENTION those "pretty & thin" girls around her. She knows they're there, but your goal as her sibling should be to encourage her to take care of herself, not to further compare her to people of different backgrounds, talents, or body types.

If she wants to lose weight, that in itself is not bad. But if this is how she's choosing to do it, you have to put her immediate health over the benefits of a healthier, often thinner, lifestyle. Once she sees herself in truth (meaning she doesn't do what she does to look like everyone else, and she sees her actual size in the mirror, not a blown up version of herself), then yes, eating less hamburgers and more salads, or exercising, is healthier. For the time being, until she'll agree to do it RIGHT, she's putting herself in danger so she can fit into a smaller size.

i was anorexic and if you don't eat, you will lose it fast. The problem is when you get rid of the weight that you wanted you tend to still not be happy and don't have much of an appetite because of the not eating. You train your body to not be hungry. I thing she would be better off joining a health club and just watching her calories. Not eating does not do your body any good. My husband started watching his calorie intake and lost about 10lbs in a couple weeks. GOOD LUCK
