I believe you are referring to the "Tori" or bone structure on both sides, under the tongue area of the lower palate and sometimes on the upper palate as well. They are overgrowth of bone and serve no useful purpose. In some cases the Tori have to be removed to allow for prosthetics (denture or partial) to be placed in the mouth.
