Why does my dog hump her bed?

2007-02-21 01:54:50 · 6 answers · asked by Anonymous in Pets Dogs

She humps her bed! She is spayed. While she humps she often shakes the other end of the bed. It's quite amusing, but why does she do it?

another update...she does this after chewing bones. She acts quite confused about whether to go back out for her bone...but it's cold out and she doesn't stay out for long.

This is totally abnormal- I have never in all my years around dogs seen a female spayed or entire behaving in such a mannner. Males yes either as a dominance thing or sometimes a stress reaction.
I suspect that your female is feeling stressed and insecure- why I dont know- but you probably need to stop the laughing at it an tell her no when she does it so that she understands its not aceptable. In the mean time is there any pattern as to when this happens as if there is some sort of pattern you may find the trigger for the behaviour and be able to address it. I would suggest that you consult a vet anyway incase there is some underlying physiological problem.

I can never get over some of the answers from some of you.
Humping by a female I think is quite odd. It may be a stress releiver or a domance thing but the longer you allow this to go on the more she will do it.
I have never allowed this kind of "behavior" to go on with any of my dogs unless they were mating. I put a stop to it right away. You have allowed her to do this and you think it's funny. Once a dog starts to do this then allowed to do this then it becomes a learned behavior.
Stop her from doing this now or she may move on to something or someone else who doesn't think it's funny at all.
Decipline is in great need here. She should not be allow to hump anything. If she starts then she is to be told no!

Hormones....Assuming she is spayed, the ovaries aren't the only source of hormones. The same is true of males. Testosterone isn't only in the testicles.

I used to have a spayed female (dog) who would hump the male cat sometimes The cat always looked very confused!

Spayed or not, most female dogs still do this. Its not a big deal, some dogs have special humpy toys. Relax and dont worry about it.

dominance. Females always hump for dominance. My female beagle humps my female pug to say I am the boss. No they are not lesbians
