Nikola Tesla had the first two patents. Tesla was the first to develope a working transmitter that coud signals more the 300 miles. Guglielmo Marconi was next in line, receiving his radio patent after Tesla's. His first radio could only transmit about 1 mile.

Heinrich Hertz was the first to transmit radio waves. Tesla also did it, but since he and Edison were enemies, the patents were turned down for him and Marconi usually gets credit for inventing the radio. When Marconi tried to charge the US for patent infringement after world war one based on British patents for using his radio, Tesla was finally granted the US patents. Unfortunately Tesla was dead by then.
