I have 2 shih tzus. Both are very loving and affectionate dogs. That is the usual in this breed. Some tend to be a little "barky" while others are very quiet. They are very smart, inquisitive, and imaginative. And can sometimes show an attitude. House training can sometimes be a problem, because of their stubborn streak! But usually once they know who is the "Alpha" or boss, they behave. They need to be groomed often. They are prone to ear problems because of their floppy ears. And their stubby noses sometimes cause snoring or "snorting". They usually enjoy exercise like walking or playing, but will, if you let them just lie around the house and sleep. They are usually good with children, if they are gentle with them. After all everyone has their limits! If treated with love and respect, they will return it two fold. They are excellent lap dogs, and love attention. They love to be loved. Their personality is loving and giving. They love to make their "humans" happy. Positive reinforcement is the best way to train them.
There are a number of websites out there that you can look at to find out more information on the breed.

Growing up we had two Shih Tzus. They wer both the sweetest animals you caould ever have. We had a male and a female, the male seemed to be smarter and the female more of a follower. The male learned how to beg, roll over, play dead, fetch and he could even stand on his hands in the corner of the room...I sware... They both lived for 11years the female died first and the male I really belive died because he missed her they wer so close. He stopped eating and went alittle crazy:)

Everything. I had one but it got ran over. My grandpa has one now. They are generally energetic but can easily be seduced into lap dogs. Mine ate his own poop though. They need haircuts often. Their main problem, if you consider it one, can be their hyperactivity. But they're fun dogs. Very playful. And they are not easily trained. No actually, they are easily potty trained but not anything else. RIP Beethoveen.
