3.2 - 3.5 mph is about average. Allow 20 min per mile if you commute into a city and walk leisurely after you get off the bus/train. Most folks can do 3 x 15 minute miles in succession, but have to think about it a little. If you hoof it, you can do 12 minute miles (5 mph) but this is basically a run-walk and you'll be sweaty when you arrive. Sweaty & the early train usually beats drier on the late train.
