It depends on how much weight you want to lose and how fast you want to lose it. Cutting your calories to 1250 a day may be too hard to start off and keep. There is not always a need to count calories in a diet, you can just cut out fast food, sodas, and candy. You would be surprised at how much of a difference that can make when coupled with exercising. But if you really want to count them calories I would go with 1500-1600 a day to start.

With no exercise 1250 calories a day intake. That translate to what 40 grams carbs a day? I am on a diet of 1500 and its pretty close I think. My carb math might be a little off. But my doctor claims I should eat 10 calories per 1 pound. So if you want to weight 125lbs then eat 1250 calories a day.

He said it this way to keep it simple than having all that complex fat verses sugars, verses fiber mathematics you see all over the net.

I have heard that about 1500 calories is a healthy amount for one day (and you shoudl lose weight fairly quickly with that). As far as the carbs...well, I am not sure and will be checking up on your answers!

1400 calories a day should be good. Stick mostly to fruits, veggies, and lean meats, low fat milk and milk products, and unsaturated fat and no trans fats. This should be a good place to start especially if you are exercising as you say you are.
