how can i convert colored photos to b&w photos in photoshop?

Under the "Image" menu, select "mode" then "greyscale".

The easiest
Image > Mode > Greyscale

Advanced
After the steps above, select Image > Adjustment > Level
above the Output Level, there's three small triangle, clik and scroll the black triangle to the right or the white one to the left, stop when you think it's just about right.

In one of the toolbars at the top there is an option to @convert to grayscale@

Control + U, then get rid of all the saturation

You can do it in almost any program, what you need to look for is the "desaturate" button
