We're considering getting a new puppy. Which sex is better or maybe there's no difference. What's your opinion?

Find a few good breeders and ask them. Tell them what you want to do with your dog. Do you want a couch potato? A hunting companion?

In some breeds, the genders do exhibit some differences and in others the differences are less noticeable. I don't know about bassets and I wouldn't want to generalize based on other breeds.

Some breeders may even see difference in the genders between different "lines" of dogs.

If you narrow it down to a gender, see if the breeder has someone do a personality/puppy aptitude test on the pups at 7 weeks old. The Volhard test is a popular one. They use the test to better match the puppies to the new families.

All that being said, personally I would go with a female. I originally planned to get a girl when I went looking for my current dog (not a basset) and was encouraged by breeders to get a male based on what I wanted to do with the dog. They were right and he is perfect for our family, but I really would have liked to have added another female to our house. LOL

Best wishes on your decision. Bassets are such adorable dogs.

I love boys! i just think they have great personalities! but girls are so much sweeter! but a bassett hound is just a great dog anyway so it really shouldnt matter just when you go pick from a litter try getting the puppy thats alert or one that walk to you!
good luck

id go with a girl.. a bassett hound just kinda looks like a girl dog to me.. i wouldn't want to get a boy just knowing all the crap he's gonna get from the other guy dogs in the neighborhood about his ears.. could really be traumatic for a young bassett

I recently got a female basset and she learns very fast. I prefer females over males because they are easier to train. My basset is also on my 360 page if you want to check her out. She is a clown and keeps me laughing. Which ever you decide on, you will enjoy having a basset hound.

I happen to prefer the boys, although there's not a huge difference in this breed. The boys tend to be a bit more affectionate.
