I think this is shocking for a supposedly developed country. Not a single other western nation can boast such ignorance.
But then, I'm not American. Whats your opinion as a US citizen?

My statistic was taken from a handout I was given in a sociology lecture. I didn't verify it so maybe its suspect.

Yes it is a sad statistic. Just goes to show what brainwashing kids at an early age can do.

If it is accurate, yes, that disturbs me very much. What really disturbs me is the power that some have gained for themselves by SELECTIVELY interpreting parts of the Bible as literal truth.

People need to READ the Bible and figure it out for themselves. The real ignorance is in the likelihood that far more people believe in the literal truth of it than have actually read it.

a large type of people do trust that the Bible is the comprehend God and that it really is truly genuine. i could not ascertain the precise share, notwithstanding it really is up there. notwithstanding, many human beings (those who trust besides as those who do not) have not at all truly studied it wide, so that they don't absolutely comprehend what it really is that they declare to trust or disbelieve. i became at a technology lecture once the position a specialist technology author (nonChristian) absolutely advised the gang, "The Bible says that Jesus ascended to heaven in a bronze spaceship," and no one interior the room contradicted him! (i'm ashamed to admit that even I enable him spoil out with it, because i turned right into a touch intimidated about being the in effortless words believer there.) Church club varies from denomination to denomination. i have not at all formally "joined" the church I belong to, notwithstanding it really is not any longer truly mandatory. i'm able to nevertheless attend, donate, take communion, and serve there without club.

I do not believe such but why should it disturb me that others do? Isn't that one of the reasons people came to this country in the first place? So that they could believe and worship freely the way they wanted to. Why do you find it shocking?

I have to say, I think that many Americans didn't understand the question, as it was posed in the poll.

"Do you believe that man was put on earth much like he is today"
--or something to that effect...

I hope, wish and pray that it is only about 15% of the population who believe in true Creationism and the timeline that some nutter bible thumper made up.

I'm sure that if you asked the question:

Do you think that the earth and universe are literally 6000 years old?

Or do you think that it is significantly older?

And do you believe that it is about 4 billion years old, and the universe is older, about 13 billion years old?

I think that a good 75-85% of those polled would say it is significantly older.

Or how about just a strait forward question: Do you believe Darwin's theory of evolution is the most probable explanation to our origins?

Again, I think about 75-85%--depending on the region of the US, of course, would say yes, most certainly.

It is one thing to believe the message of the Bible ie: love each other, be good, etc, however you are correct, to take the Bible literally is a terrifying thought. That kind of zealotry only leads to hate and violence, which are now seeing come to the fore.

Yes, I wish it were much higher. Even if 50% believe in the literal truth of the bible, they sure don't live by it.

From where comes these statistics?
I think the Americans are not bad when they firmly stand out for the freedom of religion in the world. America is good with faith in God and in democratic governance. I am proud of being grandfater of two American grandchildren.

50% appears to be a very high number for those who believe in the literal truth of the Bible.

There is a difference in believing "in" the Bible, in its messages and in its meanings, and in believing that every word in the Bible should be taken literally.

If you take the blue states, for example, I'm sure the number would be in the single digits.

The easily influenced are more likeley to follow the word of those with more power than them- ie pastors, etc..

This is the same country that believes global warming doesn't exist and that if something is a "theory" it should be counted as false.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to put my children to death for talking back to me.
