What's the best tool for sharpening my edges between runs? Just something small enough to keep in my pocket and sharpen if I ever feel like my edges need a small lift. I'm not very experienced with tuning skis, so I'd preferably want something easy to use.

Thanks!

what you want to keep in your boot bag is a variable side edge tuner with a diamond stone in it. Ask the tech at your ski shop what degree angle you want to set it at, (each ski is different) and use the diamond stone to clean up the side edge and remove any burrs that may develope. If you make nice with the ski tech he might take a few minutes to show you how its done. Once before you go out for the day ought to do it. The diamond stone will only remove the burrs and not really take any of the actual edge away. I leave the base edge and the actual filing to my ski tech.

I highly doubt that you need to carry a edge tuner with you. Unless you hit a big rock you will be ok for the day. Buy yourself a hand tuner for quick repairs. You do not want to sharpen your skis all the time. You only have so much edge on your skis. If you take it all away you will need new skis. If you ski in a lot of powder you only need to sharpen your skis after 15-20 times. If you ski on hardpack and ice you will want to do it more frequently.

As stated before, you do NOT want to get in the habit of over sharpening your edges. Unless you are REALLY out ripping hard on a daily basis, giving your self a mid day tune up is over kill. I got in the habit of tuning my skis before every day, and my edges were worn to nothing in no time. That works for sponsored skiers, but not us every day skiers. I generally sharpen my skis after 4 or 5 days, rorbefore a particularly big day out.

Something like that multi-tuner. Although, realistically, it's more designed to bevel the edges, you could probably freshen up your tune on the go.

My question is why? If your edges are sharp already, during the course of a day you shouldn't need to sharpen them, unless you are skiing on boiler plate (ice) all day long.

An edge will typically hold for quite a while, except for bad conditions in the east, such as if you ski Whiteface...aka Iceface.

Anyways, enjoy!
