I doubt god turned him into a ugly goat demon when he was cast out of heaven... I think it is all just a way believers need to 'demonize' the image to show the difference between angels and devils when after all, they came from the same flock.
I'd rather have the pitchfork over a pansy little harp ;)

The Devil can look like whatever he wants.
He looked like a serpent when he appeared to Eve.
But yes, the form you describe him in is very ridiculous.
