The flag does not accurately connote Australia's status as an independent nation. The Union flag at the canton suggests Australia is a British colony or dependency

Because Australia is an independant British protectorate. Not a republic.The Queen of England is represented in Australia by a Governor General.
I am wondering whether Protectorate is the correct word. Somebody enlighten me

because the english landed there and claimed it as their own, many years ago. our Queen, elizabeth still reigns there but they have a prime minister who handles the overall running of the country. that is why they have our flag in the corner. they also have the southern cross represented on their flag. this is a star constilation found in the couthern hemisphere.
