I have had a sore throat now for 5 days. After waking up in the morning and taking my hot shower I have a productive cough where I cough up that nasty phlegm... yellowish/grey/green and thick. But as the day goes on that stops and I only have the dry cough which makes my throat hurt worse. I have nasal congestion too. When I walk fast down the hall and around the plant I work in and then back to my desk I am out of breath and start coughing for a few minutes. Is this just a cold that passes or something to be concerned with?

i would definately say you should go to the doctor. if you don't you should at least stay home from work for a few days and rest. I don't know what kind of plant you work at, but it can't be healthy for you to be walking through where there is most likely some kind of stuff in the air for you to breathe in. your body doesn't even have time to try and heal itself when you keep pushing it by going to work. however it does sound like you have an infection of some sort with the green phlem and a cough like that needs to be checked out too. also strep throat can be very serious, you need to be tested for it. please do your body a favor and get checked out today. you won't get any better continuing the way you are.

As long as you don't have a fever and the color of your phlegm gets better as the day goes on, then I wouldn't worry yet. Give it another 2 or 3 days and if you're getting better, just hang in there, but if you don't get ANY better or worse, then it may have moved into your bronchioles and maybe bronchitis. Another indicator of immediate attention would be if there is any trace of blood in your coughed up congestion. Just push fluids and watch for a few days for a trend toward the better or worse with warning signs being: fever or dark phlegm (later in the day, morning's congestion is ususally darker and thicker), or bloody coughs which aren't letting up or showing improvement.
Another thought: don't take any cough suppressants because it not only masks your warning symptoms, but it also stops your body from natually expelling the phlegm from your lungs and that can lead to bronchiole or even pneumonial infections.
Hope you feel better.

You may need to see a doctor. You might not need antibiotics. The majority of "sore throats" are caused by viruses which do not respond to antibiotics. However there are some other things that DO respond, and it might be worthwhile to get checked out. If you do have tonsillitis then antibiotics will help you get over it quicker.

You should have some pain relief, and the doctor can also help you if you need a sick certificate.

Try out some home remedies first. Sore throat is usually due to a viral infection. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. You can find some good home remedies at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

A doctor needs to listen to your lungs, maybe take a chest xray. You could have bronchitis, possible a bad cold, maybe a sinus infection, too. There is a great antibiotic that is made just for the upper and lower respiratory infections, Avelox. I'm prone to sinus infections and bronchitis and always have good results with Avelox. Please call your doctor or go to a walk-in clinic and get yourself examined! Take care & get well ;-)

Well, my advice to you is to see a doctor, because he can tell if it's viral or bacterial. As it sounds to me, it's bacterial and you should get some antibiotics (not on your own, please). There is a lot of complications if bacterial infections don't be treated properly. Hope you'll get better soon :)
