The Engine is The Engine is 2.3L L4 HSC. I only Paid $995 for it, don't want to spend to much more on it. It has 104,000. I know some engines if the timing belt brakes has clearence and won't damage the engine, while others (Like ny 2001 Hyundai accent) will damage the engine.

You don't. A 1993 Ford Tempo does NOT have a timing belt on it. It uses a timing chain.

To Cooks, NO Ford Tempo engine has EVER used a timing belt EXCEPT the rare '80's models equipped with the Japanese built 2.0L DIESEL. These engines had TWO timing belts. One for the camshaft, and one at the rear of the engine for the fuel injection pump. BUT, the asker DID specify the 2.3L gas engine, so it's a moot point anyway!!!!

You won't incur damage to the engine if the belt breaks on this model; however, you don't want to get starnded either, so change it out. The rule of thumb is 60,000 miles as a preventive maintenance item, but you are living on borrowed time. It will run about $150-$200 for the work - maybe more in certain areas.

I can't say for sure, but I think it is 50,000 miles. I will say that with 100K on the engine it is well past time to change it. I'm not sure if the 2.3L engine is an interference engine or not. ( One that will damage the engine if the belt breaks.) Good luck.

14 years old is a pretty good lifespan.
Usually they last between 120,000 klms.

It's always better to have it replaced before it breaks. At least you'll save on towing and also on labour.
