Timing is computer controlled, if it's off the car will run bad.
RPM should stay around 1800 or less at cruising speed.

Agreeing with the above comment, you would have a check engine light on as well if your timing was out.

to check if your timing is off you would have to remove your timing cover. set the vehicle on top dead center and see if your timing marks line up. if they don't then your timing is off. but that isn't something that just happens the timing belt would have to slip a tooth. or your tensioner would have to have backed off.
