This probably is the arch wire that comes out the very last molar tooth at the back. You're in a braided coil wire when you first start your ortho and they probably didn't trim the wire close enough at the back to keep it from slipping out of the molar band loop, because it's flexible it can't be bent at the back like the other arch wires. So it may be a little too long and catching on the soft tissue of your cheek. Call the ortho office and let them know, they will get you in and snip it closer so it will stop getting caught in your cheek before you get your cheeks too sore. It happens a lot and wax won't stay on since you move your cheeks when you talk, swallow and especially smile, so it's better to let them cut it off a little shorter for your comfort. Hope I've been of some help today, good luck with the treatment and congrats on the braces!

Additional info: wax is fine for the "brackets" that have the tissue irritated. I believe Abbas M is referring to the "arch wire" sticking out in the back grabbing her cheek. I know you all remember that sometimes it didn't get snipped close enough or bent down and it would catch and dig into your cheek. I think this is what's going on and it needs to be clipped if it is before the tissue becomes hamburger meat. For the rest of you, if the assistant isn't bending your arch wire after placement, then you need to remind her or ask the orthodontist to bend it. It's always bent except in the first braided coild wire since it's too flexible.

Hi Well I have had braces now for 1 year and half and should be having them off soon so I know what your feeling like. Firstly, your braces don't hurt. They will feel weird on your teeth for the first week then you will not notice them. The only time braces hurt is when your dentist either changes or tightens the wire but the pain only lasts a day so that's not too bad. Having 2 teeth out isn't bad either. I had to have 4! It doesn't hurt because you have an injection to numb your cheeks so you don't feel anything so that is bad either although I suppose it does hurt a little but not loads. Finally I have had pink braces and purple braces but its your choice on what colour you decide to have. I hope this has helped and reassured you.

You need to use wax to place it on the areas where it is hooking or it might be that your wire may be a bit long and thus hooking your cheeks. With time you will get used to it although it can be kinda sore. You just got your braces so your are still get accustomed to it. I suggest get some wax and place it over the braces that are hurting you.

This happened to me and it was painful. I think its just because your mouth swells up for a bit when you first get them on and it catches on your braces. I feel for you i know how sore it is but it will settle down. My dentist gave me wax to rub on the sharp bits so maybe go along and get some.Try not to talk and just keep your mouth closed, not easy i know but i found mine settled down quicker when i was off work and didnt need to speak! Hang in there, i promise you will soon not even know they are there and its so worth all the pain x

Get some beeswax from your orthodontist to cover the sharp edges while you're getting used to your braces; it's a huge help!
