Aaron shared responsibility for wrong when he,along with Moses, failed to sanctify and honor God before the congregation in the incident involving the providing of water at Meribah at Kadesh. For this action,God decreed that neither of them would enjoy the privilege of bringing the nation into the Land of Promise.Nu.20:9-13.
Also Aaron was at the ripe old age of 123 and his name is thereafter used in the Scriptures in an honorable way.

The real moral of the story is this:

Neither Moses and his law, nor Aaron and his old testament priesthood had the power to convey anyone into the Promised Land.

Neither the old law nor the old temple worship system had the power to get anyone into Heaven, either.

Numbers 20:22 The whole community of Israel started out from Kadesh. They arrived at Mount Hor. 23 It was near the border of Edom. There the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,
24 “Aaron will join the members of his family who have already died. He will not enter the land I am giving to the people of Israel. Both of you refused to obey my command. You did it at the waters of Meribah. 25 “So get Aaron and his son Eleazar. Take them up Mount Hor. 26 Take Aaron’s official robes off him. Put them on his son Eleazar. Aaron will die on Mount Hor. He will join the members of his family who have already died.”
27 Moses did just as the LORD had commanded. The three men went up Mount Hor while the whole community was watching. 28 Moses took Aaron’s official robes off him. He put them on Aaron’s son Eleazar. And Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.
29 The whole community found out that Aaron had died. So the entire nation of Israel sobbed over him for 30 days.

Verse 24 answers your 'why' “...Both of you refused to obey my command. You did it at the waters of Meribah."

Later in the book the story is retold in greatly abbreviated form:
Numbers 33:38 "The priest Aaron went up Mount Hor when the LORD commanded him to. That’s where he died. It happened on the first day of the fifth month. It was the 40th year after the people of Israel came out of Egypt."

Aaron, though he dies for his transgression, is not put to death as a malefactor, by a plague, or fire from heaven, but dies with ease and in honor. He is not cut off from his people, as the expression usually is concerning those that die by the hand of divine justice, but he is gathered to his people, as one that died in the the arms of divine grace. ......Moses, whose hands had first clothed Aaron with his priestly garments, now strips him of them; for, in reverence to the priesthood, it was not fit that he should die in them.

Aaron still went to heaven as all born again christians do. They are still sinners, only forgiven.

to complete some other questions, Aaron shall die on that time so his son Eleazar could be beside Moshe to learn on the desert what he had to know before entering the land of Israel to serve on the tabernacle.
