Ms Mat Urity I assure you I am "having no one on" I know exactly what I am looking for and after asking for a little advice on this website I think I will have one made. I simply wanted peoples opinions about the best of the best.
And the person who said no to tiffanys (sorry I forget your ID) I agree that it has become too common, I hate that the once exclusive items have now become available to just anyone, I remember when Burberry was an exclusive label!! he he

The absolute best is to choose a stone and have it set just for her. There are a lot of places in Hatton Ground in London which do that. Alternatively, if you want a named jewellers, go with De Beers, Tiffany or Cartier.

I applaud you for wanting to purchase the best of the best. A diamond is an investment.
However, diamonds are diamonds. They all have imperfections, they're all carbon, and they're all beautiful. And at the end of the day, unless your fiancee wears the box it came in around her neck, no one is going to know whether it came from Tiffany's, Cartier or anywhere else (unless you tell them). A GIA certified, F Color, VVS1 diamond is going to be a GIA certified, F Color VVS1 diamond whether you buy it at Cartier or somewhere less "exclusive." The difference? The price.
Your best bet, honestly, is to work with a small, local jeweler. They will take the time with you, teach you EXACTLY what to look for - the 4C's, as well as things like frosting around the girdle, the and the width of the table in proportion to the depth of the diamond.
A good jeweler will help you find EXACTLY What you want, at the price you want to pay, and get the best diamond & setting for your money. You absolutely cannot beat the service you receive when developing a relationship with your jeweler - especially the smaller ones. They want your business for life, and will go out of their way to make sure they do right by you.
As an added bonus, most small jewelers' have lower overhead, which means that you'll be able to purchase a larger high-quality diamond for your money.
Best of luck to you!

For the best value (which means you can spend the same but get a nicer stone), you should really get to Antwerp or Amsterdam.
My wife and I went to Antwerp for the weekend - you can get a cheap flight or go via Eurostar if based in London - and depending on how you look at it, we either saved about £2000 on the engagement ring she wanted, or got a diamond worth that much more than we would have done otherwise.
If you want great service and top-quality products, I'd recommend Slaets - they made our wedding rings, and couldn't have been nicer or more helpful.
Oh, and if you like small, intimate, friendly hotels, stay at the Firean.

DO not go to Tiffany's like everyone is suggesting for an engagement ring. Yes their rings are good quality (not the best), but you are also paying for the little blue box. They are highly overrated and have become a household name, easy to obtain.
As for where to go, do not get a ring from a place simply because of its name. Go for the most perfect diamond you can, at a quality jeweler.
If you are going for name...you are not buying from the most excluive place.

You are DEFINITELY having everyone on. If you could afford the 'best of the best' you would know exactly where to go, probably even the most exclusive places too common for you. You would have the most expensive diamond merchant in the world bring specially selected diamonds to and have a ring designed to your liking. Therefore under the circumstances I think you should try ebay!!! Aplogies if I am wrong and you are minted, in that case let me be your right hand woman and for say 10% if the value I'll find you that ring!!!

well firstly congrats and i hope it goes well. why not get one made? you can have it inscribed with the date of the proposal after she says yes!!! plus you can pick the cut of diamond and get the best gold. have a look around the shops for ideas or go to a jewellers who custom makes rings and get ideas from them. id rather have something like that than an off the peg design that anyone can pick up!!!
i hear Birmingham has a fab jewelry quarter where you can do this. good luck.

If you are in London
Apeys will make your ring to your own design and specification. In fact there are a few jewellers in the area and to have an original as opposed to every day would make it different and then you could tell them the price and they will work to that.
What about Harrods I am sure they might be able to help.
Then there's Selfridges
Good luck

I'd highly recommend checking out places like Blue Nile, Mondera, and Diamond.com. I run a free diamond search and free marriage proposal site at marriage-proposal-ideas.com/di... so I deal with dozens of diamond jewelry sites.
If you know what to look for, you can easily find AMAZING diamonds that you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere else. I'd be happy to help you for free (I don't sell any diamonds, but I'd be happy to help you locate some from some online merchants).
If you want, I'd be happy to do a free diamond search for you to give you an idea of the type of quality that I'd be able to find for you if you provide me with a budget.
Just go to my website and e-mail me.

hatton park is my first thought!
however why dont you see if it's really you she loves or your money and buy her a cheap one first of all, see her reaction and then you will know its true love for you,and not just because she likes the fact that you are spoiling her! As money circumstances can change even to someone with millions! Make sure its you she loves! There are lots of women I know who just like a fat wallet! good luck! I suppose if you don't try this you know the true answer in your heart!
