I'm at 39 weeks myself, and here's what I have in my bag:
Sample sizes of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, and disposable razors. A new toothbrush. A small hair brush.
Full sizes of these take up too much room & then what if you accidentally leave them at the hospital?
An outfit to take the baby home in, and an outfit for you to wear home (maternity clothes are fine, as most of us done get our shape back instantly!)
Warm socks, and a bath robe.
If you feel like it, bring makeup. I don't wear it myself, so not important to me.
Last time (this is baby #2) I brought nice PJ's, but then I was afraid to get blood on them, so I never wore them. I'm just sticking with hospital gowns this time. If my visitors don't like it...well, who cares? I just gave birth! I'm not a supermodel or anything!
Oh, and comfy undies. I don't like full briefs, but cotton bikinis work for me. They're big enough to hold a pad in place, but not so big as to be a nuissance.
Nursing pads. Even if you're not nursing, you may leak a little...and a nice comfortable bra.
They provide sanitary pads, but a few extras don't hurt, same with diapers.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

A mirror...I really didn't feel like getting up to the bathroom very much, so a small mirror would have been wonderful...Also, a phone list of everyone you want to call to let them know (u may not be in the frame of mind to remember everyone)....And, last but not least, a boredom buster: whether it be a book or music or a puzzle book...U can only spend so much time adoring baby. As for nonessentials: baby stuff, other than the outfit u want baby to wear home, u really don't need anything else, the hosp should provide u with anything u need. Also, unless extended stay, only take what clothing u need (u will want baggy).

All these are good- BUT...
Bring 2 outfits for you to go home in, yes maternity for some, but this was a big problem for me! Bring a pre-pregnancy outfit just in case you do go back to normal, in my case my pre-preg clothes were actually a little loose, but all I brought to the hospital were maternity and everything was falling off of me!
Sometimes you do go back right away- I gained 51 in pregnancy and lost 58 in birth, and I was not prepared, all my "thin" stuff was packed away, just remember that it's possible to "luck-out" and go back to normal right away! Everyone told me I looked better (body-wise) the day after I gave birth than before I got pregnant because I had a perfectly flat tummy and new hips and HUGE breasts.
Of course, I am sure this time (due in April) karma will catch up with me and I won't even drop a pound for months.

You really dont need too much stuff. Dont take a bunch of stuff you dont need to just carry it out the next day. A robe, slippers, clothes to wear home for you, clothes for baby, diapers, blankets, a bottle (if you are bottle feeding) ,nursing pads(if breast feeding), and you may want to bring your own menstrual pads as the ones from the hospital are huge! Make sure you know how to put the baby in the car seat, make sure car seat is properly put in car.Dont forget your list of people to notify when baby comes, include phone numbers. Now some people may want moisturizer, make up, etc bring those if they are important to you.Sometimes your own pillow helps when in labor ask if you can bring yours if you want to have it.
If you should end up with a c-section you may stay in hospital for longer and may need someone to bring you some other things than this. Here in US most Moms go home the next day.

Well, the only thing I actually used was my phone to call people when I got bored. My husband bought a going home outfit for baby and me when he came back in the morning and I used that. Other than that, the hospital has all the essentials and i was no in mood for makeup or anything.

I know this is weird, but bring the above and bring your own pads! Some of the hospital ones are really funky, so be prepared just in case because you will use a lot of them!

The things that were the most important
(other than the obvious necessities):
Sugar free lollipops for while in labor
a hair tie
make-up (everyone that comes to see you will have a camera)
if you are not breastfeeding, bring a tight sports bra
A big terrycloth robe that snapped, so my butt did not hang out
slippers with rubber soles for walking around

I took: Hair brush, toothbrush, toothpaste, unscented lotion, extra clothes to leave in (stretchy things). Big granny underwear, deoderant, my own shampoo and conditioner.
I took a book and cribbage board and didn't need them because my hubby and I didn't play at all. I was induced so I was there the night before but we still didn't do any of it.

A good book or some puzzles, a hospital stay can be REALLY boring. Baby clothes, PJ's toiletries etc.
Oh, don't forget some nice warm socks (for when you're in labour), I forgot mine and my feet were freezing.
