SOunds like a possible allergic reaction. My fiance used to wake up randomly some days with swollen knees! weird. I'd say go to the doc, they can do some allergy tests or suggest other reasons for this oddity.

Possibly an allergy. Did you take any medication; prescription or OTC, that you normally don't take?
Also, any swelling should be checked out by a physician to check for systemic edema.

Could be a cardiovascular disorder. See a doctor if it continues and esp. if you also have shortness of breath.
