"An" and "Every" are both quantitative adjectives.

You can't put two quantitative adjectives together.

"An" is an article that implies just one single thing. "Every" is an adjective that implies a totality, or each one in a series or collection.

"An" can be placed ONLY in front of a noun, meaning a person, place, or thing. The only exception is when you place a 'descriptive' adjective right in front of the noun.

"An exceptional woman" would work, since 'exceptional' is descriptive.

"An every woman" would not work, since 'every' is quantitative.

The second sentence without a doubt is the correct one. The word 'an' just doesn't fit into the sentence. When you say nehind EVERY, you are talking about many women, but if you were talking about just one woman, you would say, 'behind A great woman....'. The word 'EVERY' is used for plural and the word 'AN' is singular. Understand? :-)

the an doesn't belong there. Because it gives importance to the every.

And the quote is "behind every great man is a woman."
