You are required to keep your hair at a certain length. This is usually the buzz cuts you see soldiers with all the time. This is because your hair can interfere with the effectiveness of certain armors (Mainly gas masks and such). This is also why you are not allowed to have any facial hair besides a short, neat mustache and even that's not allowed in Basic. Facial hair prevents your gas mask from sealing properly therefore putting your life in danger.

No, but it does have to be above the ear and clean and tapered in the back. Head Shaving is only for the basic trainees. It's more efficient than trying to style every new recruits hair and it is one of the first steps in getting you all to think as a team because you all look alike. .

In my point of view, it is not aganist the rule but for hygience purpose and to look presentable as a soldier, you can grow your hair but can only maintain a short and neat hair cut.
As a soldier, you wear helmets for days during trainings in outfields. There are no toilets in the jungle for you to shower and hence the need for short hair. When you are wearing a beret or jockey cap in public, a neat haircut shows discipline and good image for the millitary organisation.

Yes. The ancient Romans figured out a clean head and face gave opponents less to grab hold of. Long hair and beards are just handles on the head, making it easy to get your neck broke in hand-to-hand combat.

You are not required to have a buzzcut. Your hair does have to be cut above your ears and tapered in the back. No "extreme" cuts like a mowhawk etc.
