I don't think anything really "causes" atheism. Atheism is what you are left with because none of the other religions can prove the truth of what they assert. Athiesm is sort of the default result.

The single greatest cause for Atheism in the western Hemisphere is WESTERNIZED Christianity.
Most of us have shut off our brains. Now fellow christians, before you jump, I say this from observation over 10 years of ministry - most of us who claim christ only "do" the christian thing for about an hour on Sunday morning.
This is not what Jesus called us to.

My atheism was the result of years of study, reflection and research. I was raised a Catholic. If there is a fault to be assigned, it would have to be the generally ridiculous nature of religion. I mean all of them. A couple are just plain scary in the levels of their ignorance.
Science has the right answers. At least, the answers make more sense.

I wouldn't blame the Christians. I would say it is the religion. It is filled with passages about God and the israelites killing people. It has a message of hatred for other people who believe other things. When you go into the NT it changes, another reason not to trust it. When you look into the teachings of Paul it starts talking about obeying your masters, and calling homosexuals fornicators and saying they will go to Hell. Let's not even get into Revelation.
And thats only referencing those that became atheists purely because they reject Christianity. There are others who became atheists for other reasons.

the single greatest cause for atheism is the existence of SO MANY magical sky fairies.
Christians seem unable to see that there are SO many religions out there. None seems more valid than the other from an atheist perspective.

I do not blame Christians or those that soil their faith for my non belief. My skepticism comes from a lack of evidence in any higher beings. Old myths and books based on those myths are not evidence. The real evidence shows that man evolved from an ancient ape like creature and man 'invented' the spirit world along the way to try to explain things around him before he discovered the scientific method. I respect your right to believe anything you want. Just respect my right not to believe.

Well, to a point. The Bible is a horrible faerie tale and that pushes some. I don't think that it is really the main reason (at least for me) but actually reading the Bible did more to solidify my position than anything else could of.
So I take that statement to be more an indictment of the ideas in the Bible than of its followers.

The followers of christianity are the reason why I turned away from the church. Not being able to feel God's love and mercy in my heart is the reason why I turned away from God.
Everyone told me that if I have Jesus in my heart, then I will be a happier and better person. When in fact, (ironically) it made me a guiltful, and depressed person.
