I think it is a little of both. I have dealt with rescues that had separation anxiety, so in my experience I"ve learned that it is important to try to make my absence a somewhat positive experience, rather than a negative experience. I generally leave down things like rawhide, kong-type toys with tasty stuffings (rice and tofu or dog kibble), and I fill things like plastic juice containers with dog kibble so they can use them as toys and knock them around to get food out. They absolutely love it, and now, anytime I get ready to leave, they get a an excited "I know I'm about to get some tasty treats) look on their faces.

I think your correct. Many people don't take in account how smart their dogs are. I believe they think allot more than people give them credit for. I agree with you. My dog hates it when I leave for work and you can tell by how he acts. I also believe he knows that I look forward to coming home to greet him as much as he does me. Dogs are the best!!!

I know what you mean... my dog parks himself at the top of the stairs so that i have to practically break my neck to get down them.... then when i say goodbye he turns his head away as if to say 'talk to the hand'

That is what they are thinking. They want us to stay home with them. Even though we only lay around they still want their alpha with them.
