My male dog is always hyperactive take him on long walks still jumps around when we get in, only feed him twice a day...the only reason im getting annoyed is him jumping about all the time he's like flipping tigger bouncing of doors, banging into me and my partner and he is a huge dog , i couldn't trust him with a small child he wouldnt bite it would be the fact he would be too hyper and knock them down with out realising ....

Its all about boundaries. Your dog has to learn that jumping around in the house is a NO NO. He might see you and your house as his bouncing area so its up to you to make clear that he is only supposed to do that and once you have established these family guidelines he will behave much better. You might have chased him around and played active games with him when he was a puppy and this behaviour is now stuck. He needs to have a comfy place/area where he can manouver around after a long walk but should know where his basket/pillow is and should be bale to rest when required. I use the keywords "Good night" when things get out of hand and my two dogs walk off an lie down on their pillows and rest and calm down. They know, no toys or bones allowed in certain areas - All a matter of dicipline. Give it a try!

Do you let him off the lead to have vigorous exercise? (you can walk a big dog on a lead for ever - they will never use up their energy that way!). He sounds like he'd like more stimulative exercise and training. Have you tried agility classes? This would tire him out and make him happy and content enough to have a lie down whilst at home. Did you think it was sweet and reward him for this sort of behaviour when he was little? If so, he doesn't realise that now it isn't so cute and it is undesired behaviour. You need to calm him down - ignore him when he is jumping around. Get him to sit and do things for a reward. Walk out the room if he is hyperactive. There are little remote controlled mist spray devices which are safe and give him a spray when he is doing something undesirable. He will soon learn. Also look at clicker training (lots on internet about this). He sounds like he'd be good for this too. Look at his diet - he may have too much protein in his diet, giving him too much energy. Also, you should check with your vet, there may be something wrong. Has he been neutered? Sometimes this can calm a dog down - although this depends on how old he is. Hope you get it sorted - sounds like you are good to him. Just need some guidance! (I've got a Ridgeback - I know exactly where you are coming from!)

Hi! Check the food your giving him. sometimes the food will make them hyper. Make sure it's a good quality food Like Nutro, or even Royal Canin OK. Sometimes an allgery will show itself as hyperactivity. It could be that he need some training.
Look for a good class to enroll in. Hyper dogs remain hyper even if they are sprayed or nutered. Having a dog altered does not calm them down it's a misconception. Any good vet will tell you that. If you haven't had your dog nutered or sprayed then it's just a good idea to do so. Makes for a happier and healthier pet.

Check to see how much protein is in his food. Make sure that it's real protein or protein meal (real protein ground down). To much protein is like giving a kid chocolate. Most dogs should receive around 24%-28%. His food should contain NO by products either.

Along w/ his walks he should be getting 30 min-1 hour of all out running a day. Jog w/ him instead of walking him for one of his walks. Teach him fetch so he gets some good running in. Talk to some of your neighbors w/ dogs and see if they would like to do play dates w/ you every night.

Idon't know how old your dog is but most of them calm down (which somtimes isn't by much lol) around 2 or 3 years of age. Just be patient. Continue your training and have him become proficient w/ his commands mainly sit and down. So when he becomes overwhelming you can put him in down and tell him to stay till he relaxes.

Good Luck

Hi
I have had these kind of dogs in my life!
1st the most important thing you can do is go to dog training with him. This way no matter how crazy he gets you can command him to lie down, sit, etc. He really wants to please you so he will probably be trainable. The 2nd thing is...some dogs out grow it. if they are puppies to "teens" this can still happen. The worst month for a dogs behavior is 8 months old. Try to get through to the better stage! Lastly, u have 1 big dog on your hands. walking him...better yet running him tired is a good idea. Get one of those easy to throw balls....one with a rope attached for better distance,go to a park or field and chuck It over and over. he will run after it. and get tired.good luck...in the end they are worth it,
I hope everything works out for you.
good luck

Had 2 staffs and they both didn't grow up until they were around 4, big bounding bears!

Are you in the UK? if so try BBC Three 7PM dog borstall on TV Mon-Thurs. Very informative program.

Could be so many things. He could be like that naturally, in which case the best option would be some form of behaviour training, which may help.

If this is a new trait, consider if there has been any change in diet, etc.

Unfortunately, sometimes there's not much you can do about it.

Good luck.

is it a lab?

Some dogs are just hyper. That's that.

Get him neutered. That and age are the only things that will calm him down.

Male dogs are full of hormones and if you get him neutered it should almost certainly cure his hyperactivity. MY vet suggested is to me and it worked.

Do you leave him somewhere where he can't be in contact with you? or on a leash in the house? because if that is it well, there is the problem, dogs that are crazy like that its because they don't get enough attention
