He is almost 4 and eats a regular diet of Pro Plan dog food and Eukanuba Biscuits and the occasional Pedigree Busy Bone/Big Chew. He does get people food, but its usually either cheerios, or whatever meat we are eating with dinner with the majority of the spices washed off. He has thrown up mostly in the am and it is a yellow frothy substance. I'm worried :( I am going to call my vet, but hope someone else may know why this is happening.

I had a question like this last week at Petsmart (I tour petstores educating people on pet nutrition). It could just be because he has an empty stomach. Do you ever feel nausious when you're really hungry? OR it could be because he has to go to the bathroom.

Okay..that one did sound weird LOL. But my English Setter will hold herself. She WILL NOT go to the bathroom in the house even if it kills her, but it does make her sick.

She will hold herself and then vomit in the middle of the night (once in a great while - not all the time) if she has to go to the bathroom.

Nothing your feeding should affect him that way (though you should check to make sure your food and treats have no by products or corn) and if they do switch to a more natural food.

Good Luck

Hello. The yellow frothy substance you spoke about is most probably bile. Like humans, when dogs vomit, they want a big drink, often causing them to be sick again, which makes them want to drink again. It's just one big circle. However, when a dog does vomit, it can become slightly dehydrated. Only leave a small amount of water down for your dog, about 200ml at a time.

Do not feed your dog until tonight. If he is still vomiting tomorrow then take him to your vet. If his condition gets worse, please call your vet immediately. These are only guide lines based on my own experience. I hope your dog gets better soon.

You're wise for getting him to the vet asap. It is a symptom of any number if ailments.
My Maltese had the same symptoms and also started to become lethargic rapidly before I got him to the vets. He was diagnosed with diabetes. He's now on a very restricted diet and gets insulin shots twice daily and is back to his lively little self.
Hope yours is better soon.

my lasso/shitz does that when he has a empty stomach. Also one time his anal gland needed to be squeezed(the groomer does that) they can get real sick if that gets full. Most dogs empty the gland when they poop but some need it done
