I was born and raised in NYC and it's a great place to live. It is a safe city, 8 million people live here. If you do move here, Brooklyn is a good place to live. Come visit NYC and you will see how beautiful it is.

I lived in Queens all my life and it is not bad at all, or at least the area I live in. There is a lot of construction, though, of apartments. I live about 5 blocks from a police station and there aren't many crimes in my area. My area is a mix between suburban and urban life. Life in Queens isn't really, really expensive, unless you are looking at the real estate. My neighbor's house got sold in only a week from a couple in Michigan! I'm lucky to live in a 1 family house. However, many people on my block have made their houses into 2 family houses. I do admit driving there is a bit of a hassle. That's why I usually walk or take the bus.

In general, New York is a good place to live in. But, It all depends in the area you live in. Staten Island is clean and more quiet and suburban. Brooklyn is more urban. Manhattan is more fast paced. And the Bronx is like a cross between Queens and Brooklyn.

Life in NYC is expensive!! I lived in Queens - I personally am not a fan of NYC. I found it smelly, overpriced and not pretty at all.
I will say no-one tried to rob and/or kill me while I was there. I wandered around central park (during the day) w/out incident, and I strolled Manhattan alone w/out fear (in the nice parts during the day). A city is a city - they all have thier safer parts and no major city should be toured alone by any female at night.
Queens is basically a bunch of apts buildings (not as big as in Manhattan mine had 9 floors) and then private homes as you get closer to long island - nothing to exciting in Queens.
Visit NYC before you move there - thats a good policy w anyplace - I dont know where you are from but NYC is cold in the winter and very hot in the summer - due to the buildings. The good news is there is always something to do and you can amuse yourself even on a limited budget!

Prices and conditions vary so widely, that it's impossible to describe all the different neighborhoods. Some places in Brooklyn are very urban, but Staten Island in more suburbanish, and they are both part of NYC. You could also consider Long Island or New Jersey as places to live, and still have easy access to NYC. I grew up on LI and commuted to Manhattan for 8 years, and it was a nice quality of life and a great place to grow up.

Very fast pace, and expensive if you want to live where everything is located in the city. There are very nice places, and off course every states has the ghetto. Depends where do you want to go or live. I have been living in NY over 10 yrs, and have never encountered any troubles. Queens is a very complicated city to drive in. It has to many same name streets, & avenues, etc.

nyc is among the safest big cities in america. check the gov't stats on crime rates and try not to go by what you see in movies (and tv, for that matter).

queens is known for its diversity -- lost and lots of great ethnic restaurants, for example. affordable rents too. don't live too far from a subway stop and you'll be fine.

when you do come to visit, spend time in the neighborhoods (as opposed to the usual tourist spots) to get a better sense of how life is around here.
