Low light means less stimulation. Obvisouly, we sleep better in a calm state. Also, almost all living creatures exhibit some circadian rhythms. These are changes in our daily cycle that include brainwave activity, hormone levels, etc. Darkness also increases the production of one of those hormones called melatonin. This peaks at night (or whatever night means to your schedule) and helps with the sleep state.

because it is easier to sleep without stimuli and light is a natural stimulus for your eyes, the brightness stimulates your eyes to stay open to experience what may happen in the light. Some people can sleep with the lights on, but it is easier for people to relax in the dark.

Thats a great question. I do know i can fall asleep anywhere in any type of light if i'm dead tired. But i'f i'm not dead tired i need it to be DARK.
Once i'm asleep and the light comes on, like when my wife is getting up/ready for work i suffer until she leaves and turns the light back off, even though my eyes have been closed the whole time. But when that light goes off it feels like heaven again.

I love sleep!
