Some high-profile ads, such as a slick television campaign to attract recruits to the Territorial Army, have had little impact, with numbers enlisting for the volunteer force at an all-time low.

UK troops are practically running on empty - under-manned and under-resourced in the REAL SOURCE of this recent terrorist conflict, yet the Govt can spend vast amounts of money on "slick adverts" that do not produce the needed results.. at the same time, they can spend £1200 per door for the £2.3BILLION Whitehall refurbishment but not more much needed Chinooks - as asked for by Army Commanders, and as "promised" by Tony Bliar (sic) on 7th Oct http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5414974.stm but are STILL being waited on.

Maybe we should think of soldiers as "cannon-fodder"..? instead of HIGHLY trained professionals they are today?

It is a fair question- people may talk a good game about "supporting the troops" and put their yellow ribbon stickers out- but at the end of the day their actions say otherwise.

Sad story, vets are never given the proper respect by the country they serve. It is even worse in the United States for vets than what was described in your soldiers letter. The really sad part is that the U.K. and the U.S. are supposed to be world leaders, and they don't bother to tend to the basic needs of their own people.

It appears wealthy elitist power mongers exploit the general public all over the world, and your problem is an unfortunately common one. I have no answer for the unholy greed and immoral corruption that dominates world politics. Decent people do what they can, with what God gives them, it's the best one can hope for.

All people, not just soldiers are disposable to the elitist corporate scum who currently dominate world politics.

This question is disgusting. How dare you. No soldier should ever be lost but war is hell and death occurs. I mourn for each fallen brother and their families. The reason people don't enlist is because todays kids would rather shoot cops on playstation then fight for the rights they take for granted. Thanks to the lack of discipline parents have raised a generation of greedy selfserving cowards.
