my work friends are telling me that its very unhealthy to eat anyfood which has been opened and left over night in a tin?

I had baked beans yesterday, and just chucked the 1/2 can that i decided not to eat back into the fridge....

is this unhealthy?

The air gets to it and causes a chemical reaction between the tin and the contents, Put any unused food in a covered ceramic or plastic dish in the fridge.

Yes, because they have already been in the tin for months, if not years. As soon as you open the tin the food is exposed to oxygen and will start to decay rapidly. Some tinned foods can be left in the fridge overnight, but I wouldn't leave them for more than 24 hours.
Also, the metallic particles get into the food.

the older style tins (pre 1990's) due to the manufacturing process used to react with oxygen in the air and turn the food, and also caused some leaching of the coating and the base metal into the foods. Newer tins are ok as long as it is only a short time that they are left, however it is always better to store food in sealed or covered containers or bowls

Your friends has given you good advice. Flies foreign bodies attacking the food in a opened tin. It would be better that after the tin was opened to put it in the fridge. If it was left on the table..the whole tin could be infected.

I've heard of that being bad for tins of tomato products, like tomato sauce, tomato paste, cruched, diced or whole tomatoes.
But that's because the acidity of the tomatoes reacts with the metal of the tin once exposed to the air.
I've never heard of this being a problem for any other foods.
As a matter of fact, I very often have half a tin of baked beans in my fridge, and have never had a problem, even if it takes me 2 or 3 days to finish them. (the tin's always covered with plastic wrap of course)
I don't really think you have anything to worry about unless the food in the tin is very acidic like tomatoes or perhaps tinned fruit like pineapple or mandarins.

The way that tins are made these days, I think it's ok to do what you've done. As long as the tin's been in the 'fridge. I often do it with baked beans particularly.

You should not leave the beans in the can, but put them into a sealable container. However, just overnight should be OK - IF you put a lid or clingfilm cover on the tin.

The oxygen in the atmosphere reacts with the coating on the inside of the tin and makes naughty tastes that aren't nice.

tins ar vacuumed, that is they got no oxygen in them. but when you open them, the tin reacts with the oxygen in the air and produces toxic substances.

so you should always transfer your beans into a different cup.
