I don't think there's a reason behind it. It just happened because it could happen. It's something of a 1 in a Billion chance that we're here anyway, working out the events leading up to it aren't an easy task.
If you're looking for a reason behind the claim that the Earth was created by deity, the usual consensus is that it was created so that its inhabitants would worship said deity.

Before Creation there was only God. God was in a state equilibrium. At a point something happened that caused this state to become unbalanced. Some parts where still in the light, some where in deep darkness and there were many in between. God wanted to bring the other parts of Himself back to the light to the state equilibrium and found Creation to be the best solution.
Here we can have experiences with the posibility of raising our conciousness. Guidance was and is necessary as can be clearly seen today. For more information see our web site.

It sounds a little flippant to say this, and it does anthropomorphize God, but this was an activity that He and His Son could be involved in together.Together they could make a universe and all the things in it, and then they could create someone in their own image that they could interact with.
The bothersome part is, God says that He knew before He created man, everything that He would have to do regarding mankind and he still did it.
Thank you sticky, you made me laugh. Your argument for evolution is the best argument I have heard against evolution. If people really understood how implausible it is that all the conditions could accidentally happen necessary to create and sustain mankind.

Because in a billion billion to one chance, the right atoms just happened to collide and result in a spherical mass that just happens to be in a zone that moves in an area close enough but far enough away from the sun to maintain a fairly constant temperature and is able to sustain animal and plant growth.

To answer why God created the world is a pretty big question for the human mind. Personally I don't think I can answer that one.
