I wouldn't have given it back. I was at a casino once and was going to withdraw money. The person in front of me made their transaction got their cash and left, i stepped up to the machine and suddenly it started despensing money, i retrieved the $500 from the cash slot and i could hear the machine starting to dispense more money, this went on until i had close to $22,000 dollars. My pockets were buldging from the cash, the machine shut down and i quickly walked out of the place got in my vehicle and drove away.
That was like 5 years ago, never heard a word from anyone about that incident. I kept all the money.

I suppose it never occurred to you that the "coppers" were nearby watching the machine in a "sting" operation? It's a good thing you turned it in or else you would have been charged with theft . I don't know about British law,but here in the States, taking money from an ATM is the same as if you held up an armored car or a bank. You will face the same charges under FEDERAL law. Just remember, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Well you were on camera the entire time so giving it up would be the most beneficial thing to do. I tried to get $40 out my account via ATM before and $120 came out. They THOUGHT they had $20 in the machine only but a $100 bill came out. (ATM machines do not disperse $100 bills) it was a definite fluke. My receipt said $40 came out and everything. Had I known I would and could have gotten away with it...I would have kept it but I didnt know and I returned the money.

I would like to say yes, but no I wouldnt, I just would need the money too much. I once saw a lady withdrew some money and then go to another machine not realising she had withdrew money from the first one, and I told her. And I still would to this day because its her money. But if no one is at the machine and it looks like the machine is just spitting the money out, Id take it. But then I would worry for about a month that the police were coming to arrest me.

similar thing happened to me, i was in the que at a banks cash machine and the guy infront of me just walked off without taking his money, there was over £100 there. i did think about keeping it but know i would of been guilt ridden, anyway i guessed the guy would come back and they might check who went to cash machine next, or cctv, etc. so i took it into the bank and explained what happened and went about my daily business. half hour later i realised i needed something from the bank and went back in when i saw the man who left the money asking if any had been handed in and the cashier said NO! it was the same woman i handed it to, so i went over and told him i had given it to her not 30 mins earlier, after a little paper work he got his money back and couldnt of been more thankful, he really did need the money. maybe if he was loaded i would have felt different, everyone said how stupid i was and that i should of kept it as i could of done with it, but the way i see it thats stealing, anyhow i felt really good about myself after he was so thankful. i still think i did the right thing, i know theres not many who would do the same but it just goes to show there are a few good honest people left in this world. im sure theres not many 22 year olds who can say they would of done that, and im possitive if i hadnt gone back in the cashier would of kept it herself!

You did the right thing. Being honest is the only way to go. Had you not been honest there is a camera outside by the ATM machines and you would have been seen on that camera taking money. WOW that would have been bad

I lost some money once, when I had very little. So yes, I have been in a similar situation (picked up a wallet stuffed with money) and yes, I have given it back.
With regret. I would never have slept easily again if I hadn't. And there were no cameras.

My senior year (don't ask how many years ago that was) I found a $20 in the hallway at school. My girlfriend wanted to split it with me but I talked her into bringing it to the office.
Long story, after a week, when no one claimed it, we were given the money.
My girlfriend realized how good it felt to get the money the "legal" way.

Definitely!
Not because the cameras are watching or anything like that, but because it's not right to keep it if you know it wasn't yours! I've picked up money behind people and gave it back to them because I saw them drop it, or just brought it to their attention..."excuse me, you dropped something"...because it's what you are supposed to do.
You did the right thing by turning it in, and I'm kinda surprised at how many people wouldn't think twice about walking off with it.
