The concept of the period of lent co-insides with the 40 days that Jesus spent fasting and praying in the Forest before Palm Sunday when the rode into Jerusalem. Before his crucifixion. And the idea of giving up something for this period is just a way trying to sacrifice as Christ did.

Back in the days of Nimrod, after He (Nimrod) died, his wife Semiramis got pregnant, and gave birth to Tammuz,(See Ezekiel 8:14) claiming Nimrod had become the sun,and impregnated her (Talk about a gullible electorate). Tammuz at a young age was killed by a wild pig during a hunt, and his public were so upset that they initiated a period of "weeping for Tammuz". THAT IS WHERE LENT CAME FROM. It is another reflection of the truth that CHURCHIANITY IS A HEATHEN RELIGION!

The Catholic Church and many other Christians Churches follow the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.

By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert and in spiritual preparation for the celebration of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

This season of penance is an intense moments of the Church's penitential practice and are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and charitable and missionary works.

With love in Christ.
